As a kid, you had to learn how to avoid peer pressure. Especially in junior high and high school. After all, you were still developing impulse control, judgment, and empathy. You needed to learn how to become independent from your peers!


But as an adult, you know who you are, who you want to be, and what you want to achieve. You are fiercely independent! And proudly so. Now the struggle is to stop your independence from holding you back.


We approach most of our goals with a group, why not fitness?


When you solely stick to the mode of independence and doing your own thing, you can get stuck. You might not see all the potential and possibilities in front of you, you might not see the easiest path to get to where you want, and you might be listening to and believing the negative stories in your head. Which means that it’s time to let peer pressure inspire you and push you forward.


I’m in several Masterminds, networking groups, and mentoring programs that have absolutely helped me move forward in my business. I seek out groups of people with similar goals and drive who will inspire me, brainstorm with me, and hold me accountable. And it works! I’ve seen amazing results from group programs. And the same is true when it comes to fitness.


Why is group fitness better than solo fitness?


Group fitness programs
work. You are far more likely to succeed in your fitness goals when you do them with a group of people. There are several reasons why:

  1. Increased motivation. When you have a group of friends who are also committed to the same goals, you hold each other accountable and provide support and encouragement, which can help you stay motivated and consistent with your fitness routine. You’re not going to blow off a workout when someone’s at the gym waiting for you!
  2. Fun and social interaction. Exercising with friends can make your workouts feel less like a chore and more like a social activity! And choosing group workouts provide an opportunity for social interaction, community, and camaraderie, as you work towards your goals.
  3. Competition and challenge. Working with a group is a great way to get support. But it’s also a great way to spark friendly competition. You work harder and challenge yourself more when you’re surrounded by people who are pushing themselves.
  4. Knowledge. It’s not just you and Google against the world! You can exchange tips and get advice from each other. Not just about a workout or meal plan, but about how to take care of yourself better in every facet of your life. 
  5. Support. Having a support system in place is what will keep you pushing through the setbacks and plateaus. It’s what will keep you from feeling guilty when you prioritize taking care of yourself. It’s what will keep you from giving up!
  6. Accountability. You are more likely to stick to your fitness routine and stay committed to your goals when you have people checking in with you.
  7. Positive influence. Surrounding yourself with friends who prioritize a healthy lifestyle can have a positive influence on your own habits. You’re more inclined to adopt healthy behaviors and make better lifestyle choices when you are part of a group that values and prioritizes fitness.


But, I maintain the biggest reason why group fitness programs work is…

8. Peer pressure. When you join a group program, part of what you’re signing up for is positive peer pressure. You’re seeing other people succeed, and that makes you want to succeed. You’re interacting with people you respect and look up to, and that makes you want to push yourself and improve yourself. And when you don’t feel like showing up, you have a bunch of people convincing you to get your ass in gear.

I recently heard Dr. Mark Hyman say, “Weight loss is a team sport.” I believe that! You are far more likely to succeed in your goals and in making changes to your lifestyle, when you have a team to support you, hold you accountable, and celebrate with you.
