“I just need someone to hold me accountable.” It feels like I hear that multiple times a day. And it’s not a bad thing. After all, that’s what coaches do, right? Or maybe coaches and coaching programs should offer more than accountability. They should offer a blueprint.
I recently joined a coaching program where
accountability was the big selling point. I think that the term accountability can mean different things, but in general, that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m really good at holding myself accountable. Integrity is one of my core values. If I decide to do something, I do it without someone needing to hold me to it.
I also don’t like the slightly negative connotation “accountability” where it feels like I don’t want to do something I’m actively deciding to do. I’m a functioning adult and I’ve made the decision to set a goal or join a program. Working towards the goal should be a positive experience.
Research shows that telling someone your goals gives you at least a 65% chance of completing them and having a specific accountability partner increases your chance of success to 95%.
There’s also the idea of a
success partner. A success partner doesn’t need to be “held accountable” because they’re already motivated. Finding people who are driven and progress-focused will motivate you to push harder and think bigger.
The idea of finding a partner or network that keeps you focused, motivated, and accountable is a great idea. But is that what you should be looking for in a coach?
Going back to the coaching program I just joined… I didn’t sign up for the program because I need accountability. I signed up for it because I need a blueprint! I wanted step-by-step instructions on how to get from Point A to Point B in a more streamlined way. I wanted an expert’s knowledge so that I wouldn’t have to do all the research myself.
I think that’s what a lot of my clients are looking for. I don’t hear “I need you to hold me accountable” from my clients. I hear “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”
There is nothing wrong with wanting an accountability partner or a success partner when it comes to your health. But you can get that from a friend or a gym buddy. If you’re trying to change your lifestyle and accomplish bigger goals, you need a blueprint. You need a plan. I have something special coming up soon with a limited number of spaces.
Send me a message to let me know you’re ready for a blueprint, and I’ll make sure you’re the first to hear the news.
