Hopefully you, like me, and many others, are in the pursuit of a better version of yourself. Whether the improvements are physical, financial, emotional or all of the above, they will require some sacrifice on your part. You've doubtless heard me say before, that big changes result from a million little decisions. Each of those decisions could be viewed as a sacrifice, or are they just choices? I believe it depends on your mindset.
I know myself well enough to know that if it's not my idea, if I'm not "all in" on something, it won't happen. Being "all in" can look many ways, but it always involves a major choice or sacrifice. Here is an example: Joe decides he's going to Get Healthy! Joe doesn't currently exercise regularly, he does help his kids sports teams. He doesn't consciously choose his meals, he eats what's available, usually fast food or dinner with the family. Joe now has to make some choices....or are they sacrifices? If Joe is excited about his soon-to-be-healthy body, he won't feel like it's a sacrifice to get up early to exercise before work, he'll likely see it as a choice. Likewise, he won't see bringing lunch from home as a sacrifice of his usual burger and fries, but rather a choice to eat better.
What if Joe's wife was the person who decided that they needed to Get Healthy and he wasn't really excited about the idea?
He might see getting up early as a sacrifice of sleep, and bringing lunch as a sacrifice of convenience or taste.
So many people begin a journey to improve themselves with a mindset of sacrifice and loss. They focus on all the things they'll never get to do or have. The things they have to give up. Positive change has to start from a POSITIVE MINDSET. We have to focus on the goal, the reason, the why and the how, it's possible. When your focus is positively motivated, you begin to see choices and opportunities to move toward your goal.
Which mindset are you in right now? Here are a few ways to test your mindset.
- Think back to the last 24-48 hours, have you vocalized to yourself or others the words "Oh I can't because", "I gave up ____", "I'm not ____ anymore", or any phrases similar to that? How about in the last week? Yes=negative mindset
- When you woke up today, what was on your mind? How did you feel about it? Example: you woke up to exercise, did you move with purpose or have to convince yourself it was worth getting out of bed? Yes=negative mindset
- If you've had a setback recently, what caused it? Did you suddenly encounter that thing which you had been trying to "give up"? Yes=negative mindset
I recently heard this: Your higher self is always leading you to short-term sacrifices exchanged for long-term benefits. Your ego leads you to long-term sacrifices for short-benefits. I believe it's spot on. If you tune into your higher self, what you really, really desire, the long-term benefits of success will flow easily your way.
Put it into practice! Sit down and write down your end goal. Then list the positive choices you can make to achieve it. Number them from the easiest or smallest, to the most challenging, and start with #1 ASAP. Once you've knocked out 1, move to 2, 3, 4 and so on. You'll find that the positive momentum from making each little choice will help you to maintain that positive mindset and get you farther down your path to the very best version of you!
Don't forget to share how this helps you!!
