Does Fat Make You Fat?

Did you know that simply eating dietary fat doesn’t make you fat?
Navigating the world of nutrition can seem confusing, but is doesn’t need to be.

Have you ever seen an elephant eat a ribeye steak smothered in butter? They certainly have body fat to spare yet, they are vegetarian. Many of us choose salads or avoid the big steak because we’re trying to avoid gaining extra weight. If the elephant never eats the fatty foods but still gains tons, literally, of weight, what chance does a human have? The answer isn’t found simply in what we eat, the more important factor is how much.

Fat vs. Fat

Body fat has gotten a bad rap. When we say the word, “fat” out loud, it conjures up negative feelings and emotions. Many have felt shame and hurt when it was used to describe them. For decades advertisers used its absence as a reason to prove a food was good for you. Eat this fat free food and you’ll feel great! No guilt! Yet we still felt guilt and shame when we looked in the mirror.

When it comes to our bodies, fat serves an incredibly important purpose.
  1. It fuels our brain. – Our brains are nearly 60 percent fat. Omega 3-fatty acids are the essential building blocks of our brain and they're important for learning and memory. Foods which are full of monounsaturated fat, “good fats”, such as olive oil, nuts, or avocado, help improve cognitive function and overall health. When we eat these foods, we’re providing a way for our body to absorb key nutrients such as Vitamins A, D and E.
  2. It provides energy. – Fats, a.k.a. Lipids, store energy in the body. When we consume excess energy, our body converts it to lipid form and stores it for later. In addition to storing energy, lipids store key nutrients for use later.
  3. It protects us. - Fat deposits also help to insulate the body, cushion, and protect vital organs. They act as the bubble wrap around our organs.
We can definitely have too much of a good thing, though. Many have learned that when we carry too much body fat, we feel uncomfortable. We feel hot, sweaty and out of breath while performing every day tasks. Frustration at not being able to sit comfortably on an airplane or amusement park ride. Some experience joint pain, back pain or shortness of breath. Others experience more life threatening issues such as insulin resistance, impaired fatty acid metabolism, diabetes, high blood pressure and increased cardiovascular risk. This discomfort is frustrating and can make you feel as though there’s no way out.

Eating fat doesn’t make you fat.

Eating too much food makes you fat.

Our bodies are incredibly efficient machines.

They do not waste a single ounce of energy. If you give your body too much fuel, in the form of fat, carbohydrates or protein, it will eventually convert it all to lipid form and store it for later.

There is a way out.

Having a regular exercise routine is imperative. Moving vigorously every day helps our bodies to process this fuel and prevents it from being stored unnecessarily.

It’s critical to understand that just because something is “Fat Free” or “Low Fat”, does not mean it will not eventually get stored as fat. Instead, it’s better to learn how your body uses each nutrient and control how much you take in and put out.

Mindfully consuming food will help you to prevent overeating. Tuning into your body and understanding the signals will help you to avoid eating when you’re really just tired or thirsty. Having awareness of your emotional and physical state helps you to work with your body to fuel it properly and give it time to function as it was designed.

Dietary fat is critical to our bodies, especially those rich in Omega 3-fatty acids. They allow our brain to function properly, deliver critical vitamins to our cells, and protect us from trauma.

Being mindful of your eating habits and consciously moving your body every day, leads to overall healthy body weight and composition. Avoiding marketing traps such as, “Fat Free” or “Healthy”, and learning to understand what types of food are best for you, will help you keep your body running like the well-oiled machine it was meant to be.
