As we venture into the season of summer vacations and adventures, many of us find ourselves grappling with maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst the whirlwind of travel, unique cuisines, and irresistible goodies. Can vacations be healthy without sacrificing the thrill of exploration and new experiences? Absolutely, and as I head out on my first family trip of the summer, I'm eager to show you that a healthy lifestyle doesn't need a vacation - a real, sustainable, healthy lifestyle is designed to make your vacations even better.

It's a well-documented fact that vacations often disrupt our routines, including the ones around our diet and exercise. Interestingly, research from the University of Georgia revealed that the average traveler consumes an additional 120-150% of their usual calorie intake. Facts that should make you rethink your plans, right?

Staying Active: Lessons from the Road


Speaking of my own experiences, they have taught me a valuable lesson: despite our best intentions, finding the time and space to squeeze in workouts can be more challenging when we're out exploring. But here's the cool part, vacations offer tons of ways to stay active. Swap the bus tour for a walking one. Go for a beach run or hike around your surroundings. Just keep moving!


Don’t Forget to Hydrate!


In all the excitement (and extra coffees or cocktails), it's super easy to skimp on water. But trust me, staying hydrated is a game changer for your energy levels and overall feel-good vibes. So, carry a water bottle around with you.


Catch Those Z’s


And last but not least, let's not forget the importance of rest. Amidst the rush of flights, sightseeing, and late-night socializing, it's easy to neglect sleep. But remember, our bodies need rest to function optimally and to truly enjoy all the experiences that vacations offer.


Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy living doesn’t mean you need to forgo all the indulgences that come with a vacation. Instead, it’s about finding the right balance. Here are some strategies I've found helpful:

  • Plan ahead: Bring along healthy snacks and water, download short workout videos, and anticipate how you'll eat, drink, and stay active during your trip.
  • Consider accommodation options: Opting for condos or rentals with a kitchen allows for home-cooked meals, quieter rest, and space for mini workouts.
  • Schedule rest: Ensuring you have recovery time can make your vacation more enjoyable.
