Remember when you were younger and thought you could do or be anything? Do you remember the day that changed? Was it one day or over a period of years? Somewhere along the way you lost that fight, that fire that drove you to be the first one on the playground or the last man standing in red rover. What if I told you that that person is staring you in the mirror every morning, wondering when you're going to get it together?
The craziest thing about life is that we're in charge. We are 100% in control of how we view our life path and the twists and turns along the way. So school didn't go as planned, or you became a parent long before you were ready. Maybe you thought you married Mr/Mrs Perfect and now you're wondering if this is really your life. Good news, you're not stuck, you can change your circumstances and you can be happier. The not-so-good (depending on your outlook) news is, you are going to have to fight like hell and work your butt off to make it happen.
You've probably heard this before, but hopefully this will be a different take on the same old story. I'm going to challenge you to pick one thing, one area of your life, that you want to change the very most. Is it your weight? Your job? Your financial situation? Make a list of all the things that suck about that situation. Once your list is complete, go through and circle all of the items on that list which are under your control.
Example: You want to fix your job situation.
Things you can control:
1. Your boss is a jerk (yes you can actually control this, or at least what you think about this) - Whether he/she is a jerk is not under your control, but whether you walk in daily waiting for the rude comment or snide remark, is under your control. Go in tomorrow and focus on something good, anything that he/she does that is positive, productive or (gasp) nice. Allow all the other stuff to slip by like sand through a screen. Just keep the good stuff and fight for the happy.
2. You don't get paid well enough - Can you ask for a raise? Can you seek out better opportunities elsewhere? While working on that, focus on the gratitude you have for your job. It pays the bills, maybe not all of them, but it's something. It allows you to gain experience to use down the road in a better situation. It opens you to meeting new people. Focusing on the reasons you're grateful for your job will help get you through until you find something better. Wallowing in your misery will only get you more of the same.
This is just an example of one of the situations in which you feel stuck or victim to circumstance. There are thousands like it. You get to choose how you go through life. You may not get to choose what you go through in life. So choose to persist, to succeed and to find the good. You'll be happier and those better situations will seem to magically appear! Now get on getting it together would ya? Your reflection in the mirror thanks you.
