The world has changed completely in a matter of only a few days. You have two choices: wallow in negativity or use this time to better yourself. Now is a great time to start making some of those changes that you never had time or energy for before. You likely have more time on your hands and might as well use it. Creating new habits now will pay off when the world starts turning again and we can resume social interaction.
Don't give up your regular schedule just because you're not leaving your house.
The first few days of our new reality might have hit you like a ton of bricks. Give yourself a few days to recover and then get moving again. Once we've had a few days to process this new reality we're living, we need to get back into some kind of routine. Your kids don't have school, you might be working from home, so sleep in a little later, but don't waste the day. If you normally get up super early, sure, sleep until 7 am. Then get up and get going like a normal day. Get dressed and prepare for a productive day.
If you normally go to the gym in the morning, schedule a workout at home. Turn off all distractions and block that time out, just like you would on a normal day. If you have extra time, use it for longer stretching or adding some mediation time after your workout. Starting your day with movement will put you in a positive mindset and help you to be more productive throughout the day.
Cook and eat healthier, cleaner meals.
One of the biggest barriers to eating a healthier diet is the time it takes to prepare the meals. Now that you are home and have the time, get cooking! Try out new recipes, plan out a week's worth of meals and stick to it. Take out is still an option, but you're not running around town from activity to activity so save yourself the money and calories and cook! Get your whole family involved and make it an activity you do together. You might find that you enjoy it more when you make it together. Plus, you can stick to your macro plan more easily when you control the ingredients.
Add a new habit or morning ritual.
For the time being we're not rushing out the door in the morning so take this opportunity to start a new routine. Practice journaling, meditation, prayer or goal setting first thing in the morning. Find a new self-improvement book or podcast and read a chapter each day. You can also re-write your evening rituals to include less screen time before bed, meditation or reading. Spend time with your partner goal setting or dream building. Spend time with your kids discussing positive mindset and help them to learn new healthy habits. Once the world starts turning again, it'll be easy to maintain these new routines and you'll move into your regular schedule with a more positive and uplifted mindset.
Don't get lazy!
Whatever you do, DON'T GET LAZY! You're not a teenager and this isn't summer break.
If you start sleeping late, skip your workouts and live on pizza, you'll regret it big time. It might sound tempting and fun, but so did cheesecake last month when you were trying to loose weight and working out. You chose not to indulge and were glad. Choose to better yourself during this time. Think of this time as the universe giving pausing the world so that you can get on a healthy track. Once life resumes, you'll be healthier and happier that you didn't waste these days.
