"Are You Really Fine?"

Navigating the Sea of Motherhood and Self-Care


Ever binge-watch a TV show and suddenly think, “Did they secretly film my life?” That's me with the show Working Moms. It's like they've cloned my daily chaos, only with better lighting and a soundtrack.. And in one episode, a line hit me right between the eyes. One mom, when asked how she was doing, responded,


"Exhausted, all the time. Being pulled in a million directions. It's like I'm treading water... in a hurricane. Choking on seawater, being slapped around by waves. Drowning, but like, lightly."


Sound familiar? And when someone asks how we're holding up, we put on that brave face and say, "I'm fine." Oh, the dreaded F-word of the mom world. We're more than just "fine", aren't we? We're a complex blend of exhaustion, overwhelm, and unending to-do lists, topped with a sprinkle of "I can handle this".  


But hey, it's time to break the cycle and normalize (for lack of a better term) the fact that it's okay to need help.

It's okay to admit that you're exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated, and that you're just barely keeping your head above water.


So, what's the first step to admitting you need help? Here are some strategies:


  • Connect with experts: I'm talking about the experts who have not only survived the chaos but have emerged with the golden ticket to balance and sanity. These are the people we need to turn to, learning from their experiences and following their lead. 


  • Read, watch, listen: Consuming content from these experts – whether it's reading their blogs or watching their videos – can offer you some respite and a roadmap to navigate your own situation.


  • Emulate success: Identify successful women, particularly those who are where you want to be, and try to follow their steps. Learn from their successes and mistakes.
