If you could wave a magic wand and have your life instantly be what you want, what would that look like? This is one of the questions that I ask people when we’re deciding whether or not my program is a good fit for them. And we really drill down into the details of it!
What does your magical, ideal lifestyle look and feel like? What does your schedule look like? What is your stress level? How does your body look and feel? How are you interacting with the people around you?
I want to know the answers to these questions because I want to know
where you want to be. I’m sure that you can list at least five things that you don’t like about your life right now, or five things that you’d like to change. But knowing what’s wrong isn’t the same as knowing how you want things to be. When you can see what’s wrong, your focus is on getting away from where you are, but that could lead in any direction. Possibly in a direction that won’t be successful. But when you can see where you want to be, then we can start to plan a path to get you there.
When you were little, I bet you talked about what you wanted to be when you grew up and then at some point you figured out a path to take. Maybe that path included school and a specific degree or certification. Or maybe it included an internship or fellowship. But the only way you were able to figure out the right, specific path to your career, was to first know what you wanted to be!
When it comes to health and wellness, we don’t often talk about where we want to be, other than talking about what number we want to see on the scale. And frankly, saying, “I want to be down 20 pounds” doesn’t give you a path.
So what is your perfect scenario? Is it waking up when you want to and having some time to enjoy a cup of coffee? Is it having time in your day for meditation and journaling? Is it taking a break in the afternoon to sit down and eat a healthy lunch that you prepared?
When you think about your ideal day, how do you feel? Are you productive, but not overly stressed? Are you feeling on top of things? Are you able to relax at night and fall asleep easily?
How are your relationships? Are you getting home from work and sitting down to dinner with your family? Do you have time to reach out to your friends and get together with them? Do you have the energy to do something active with them? Are you confident enough to throw on that swimsuit and play at the beach with your kids?
When you start to think about what you want in those terms, you’re going to be better able to create a path and stay on it, because you can see where it’s leading you to!
Once you know where your destination is, the strategy can begin. For example, if I know that I want to feel stronger and have more energy, part of that plan will be daily exercise. And if I want to accomplish that with a morning workout, I’m going to have to do certain things. I’m going to get a gym membership or some workout equipment. I’m going to have my gym clothes and my gym bag ready to go. I’m going to find my earbuds the night before so I’m not scrambling around looking for them in the morning. If I can, I’m going to plan to meet a friend there. I’m going to put boundaries in place with my kids when it comes to their morning “emergencies.” I’m going to put boundaries in place with myself when it comes to staying up later than I should.
A healthy lifestyle doesn’t just fall into place, it takes a strategy. And my mission in life is to help you create that strategy to get you from where you are to where you want to be!
