Are you signing up for a new program because of the person selling it or because it’s the right program for you? Are you choosing style over substance?
As a personal trainer, and nutrition and lifestyle coach, I work with high-achieving, professional women. And, while I love helping them create bodies that they love and understand, I also love to see them find programs that empower them in the other facets of their life. I’m excited whenever I see them making a decision to work towards positive change in their lives. But sometimes I see them sign up for programs that may not make that happen. It’s frustrating because I support them in their decision to grow and achieve, but I really want them to be successful.
So how do you know if you’re signing up for a program that will ultimately be successful? I’ve found that it comes down to whether you’re joining a program based on what the program can specifically do for you, or your attracted to the personality of the person providing it. Luckily, there are a few questions you can ask yourself that will help you focus on the benefits of the program itself!
First, what’s intriguing about the person and their program? Is it the flashy pictures on Instagram? Do they have the body image that you wish you could have? Are they projecting a lifestyle that you wish you could live?
Make sure that what’s intriguing to you is possible for you. For example, I’m 5’2” and muscular. I’ve always had a big butt and big legs. I can think it’s great when someone is (healthily) 105 pounds soaking wet, but that is definitely not an attainable, or healthy, goal for me. And if they are only selling their body type as the goal for everyone, if they’re only selling their path to success, look elsewhere.
Next, do they offer case studies and testimonials? I’ve hired a lot of coaches. And when I hire a coach, I listen to their stuff, I read their blogs, and often they’ve coached people that I know. That’s how I know their process works. Any coach worth their salt will show testimonials that are believable and have real people attached to them.
If you’re thinking of hiring a coach, don’t be afraid to message them and ask to speak to someone who they’ve worked with. They should have references who will testify to their process.
Third, how long have they been at it and are they certified? This can be tricky because there are plenty of places that will certify you to be a health coach or a life coach. But I would encourage you to research a potential coach’s certifications. If a health coach is certified by a specific company, they’re not a certified health coach, they’re certified to sell that company’s products. That’s not coaching, that’s a sales pitch. It’s so important to find a coach with real knowledge and certifications from a governing body. Whether you’re trusting your business, your mental and emotional health, or your physical health to a coach, find one who is qualified in what they do!
As a coach, I’m confident in my answer to all three of those questions. I have a process that works for women with all body types because my program isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. I have testimonials that make me so proud of my clients and what they’ve accomplished. And I’m properly certified to do what I do. My clients get results because of my knowledge and research. If you’re looking for a fitness coach who will get you results, I hope that you’ll do your research on me to make sure that my programs are right for you! And if you want more information, schedule a call with me! Let’s get you headed towards the right program for you!
