I make no secret about the fact that I hate New Year’s resolutions. I think they’re a complete waste of time. Most New Year’s resolutions fail by mid-February, and sadly, many, many fitness resolutions end in an even worse place than they started. There’s a different way to approach a healthier lifestyle that leaves behind the outdated idea of a resolution. And no matter what day of the year you start, you can successfully create the healthy, happy life you want!
“Last year was terrible. But this year is going to be so much better!” That mindset is setting you up for failure. Because everything isn’t going to change just because the year is a different number!
Yes, bad things happened last year, just like they did the year before and just like they will this year. But good and great things also happened. And if you want to create a sustainably healthy lifestyle, it’s not about waiting for the perfect year when bad things never happen. It’s about committing to healthy habits during the easy and the hard times that will inevitably show up!
I love the idea of setting an intention or choosing a word for the year because that’s a more holistic concept than “resolving” to go to the gym a set number of days per week. Setting an intention to prioritize your health is going to take you farther than resolving to get to a certain number on your scale.
If you want to make a change, it has to be something visceral and emotional. It has to be something that you
need to change. Like anything in life, if you don’t feel an emotional connection to the goal you’re setting, you won’t care about it very long.
I’m pretty sure that setting a goal to exercise for 20 minutes every day doesn’t hit you in the gut. That’s not a goal that most people connect with on a deeper level. And you might do it for a couple of days, but life will happen and you’ll lose your motivation. Because your motivation wasn’t all that powerful.
So what’s the real, deeper reason why you want to make changes to your lifestyle? What is it that you need in your soul? Do you need to not hate how you look in the mirror? Do you need to feel empowered and strong when you run up the stairs at work? Do you need to wake up in the morning feeling motivated, inspired and excited?
That is a powerful motivation. And that’s what will drive you to a solution.
I’m hosting a
free workshop on Friday, January 6th at 1:30 p.m. (MST). This workshop is dedicated and designed to help you find your solution and move you in the direction of actual, real, sustainable change!
During the “Determined Woman Realignment and Self Care” workshop, we’ll determine what changes will allow you to get to the healthier, happier place that you want to be. We’ll look at how to structure your day to allow yourself time for self-care without sacrificing anything. And we’ll look at food, exercise, sleep, stress-reduction… all the factors that go into a sustainably healthy lifestyle.
I am always happy for anyone who decides to make a positive change in their lives. And I'm always rooting for you if you want to get healthier. I want to support you and show you how to make those changes successfully. So
register for my workshop on Friday and let’s set you up for success!
